Recycling Embedded in Medequip Processes

We are all familiar with the concept of recycling our waste and how important it is to conserve and reuse resources. However, in the world of community equipment services, recycling represents a much wider concept, playing a vital role in saving money and contributing to increased levels of sustainability.

At Medequip, recycling is an essential part of our everyday work. For us, this refers to the complex process of retrieving previously used assistive devices such as wheelchairs, walking frames and hospital beds from the community, then cleaning, maintaining and reissuing these to people who need them to maintain their safety, comfort and independence.

Our recycling processes ensure that valuable community equipment is utilised to its full lifespan, reducing waste, saving costs, and supporting environmental sustainability.

Recycling at Medequip is a four-stage process:

Collection and retrieval

We collect equipment from homes when it is no longer required due to recovery, end of life, or a change in condition. Our work doesn’t stop there; we also run programmes to retrieve smaller pieces of equipment such as crutches and walking aids through local amnesty campaigns and publicising drop-off locations and even automated telephony reminders.

Inspection and maintenance

At our depots around the country, we operate decontamination rooms, fully equipped workshops and skilled staff to ensure we reuse every possible piece of equipment. All returned items are cleaned, tested, repaired, and safety-checked to meet the highest clinical standards.

Equipment reissue

Once approved, these items are made available to people who have been prescribed appropriate assistance by clinical specialists. Availability of recycled stock means we can deliver community equipment more quickly to those who need it, alongside reducing the need to procure new items.

Safe disposal

Where items cannot be reused due to extensive damage or uneconomic viability of repair, they are disposed of in a compliant and sustainable way.

Headline recycling figures

In 2024, Medequip successfully credited back a total sum exceeding a hundred million pounds to our customers in the public sector through our recycling work.

This figure represents far more to the public purse than just financial savings. It is a model of sustainable service delivery. It supports overstretched NHS and local authority budgets, reduces environmental impact, and actively contributes to the reduction of Scope 3 emissions, aligning with the UK’s broader net-zero and public sector sustainability goals.

Long term sustainability

Every single piece of equipment successfully recycled and reused rather than newly purchased helps avoid the carbon and material footprint associated with manufacturing, packaging, and transport, which are the key contributors to Scope 3 emissions.

Medequip’s recycling model makes a real contribution in a number of ways.

  • We play a part in reducing emissions from energy-intensive manufacturing processes
  • Logistics emissions from global and domestic supply chains are also reduced
  • We limit waste to landfill, which contributes to methane emissions and environmental degradation.

Supporting the circular economy by reducing material usage and recapturing potential waste as a resource, Medequip is also helping our NHS and local authority partners achieve both net-zero targets and Greener NHS ambitions. In short, every pound saved is also carbon saved.

Total Cost of Ownership

Alongside our recycling efforts, Medequip is now delivering a Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) project in partnership with our supply chain. This work focuses on extending the lifespan of assistive equipment and driving continuous product improvement.

This collaborative approach is not only enhancing value for the people who use our services and those who commission them, but also actively supports the reduction of Scope 3 emissions by promoting more sustainable product design, reuse, and lifecycle management.

Beyond Medequip

When items are deemed beyond economical repair or reuse within the UK, Medequip enjoys long standing partnerships with established charities to donate suitable equipment to international communities in need. This approach ensures that equipment continues to provide value whilst reducing waste and supporting global health initiatives.
